Title: Navigating through Cultural Barriers in Applied Behavior Analysis
The ultimate goal of any helping professional is to effectively treat the presenting problem(s) experienced by the client and their family. However, practitioners are frequently faced with the challenge of navigating complex cultural barriers of which they may not have been previously aware. Across disciplines, and particularly in the field of behavior analysis, clinicians are faced with developing an understanding of various social and cultural differences within family systems in order to effectively promote meaningful behavior change. The challenges encountered may pertain to linguistic barriers, cultural values, or discrepancies related to therapist/client relationship. Particularly in our field, it is imperative that we as clinicians establish a positive working relationship with our clients from which to build sound and successful interventions. To this end, we must be cognizant of how potential cultural or social nuances may impact our services and their effectiveness. When developing behavior intervention plans based on the principles of applied behavior analysis, the practitioner must take into careful consideration a family’s cultural values in order to identify interventions that are culturally sensitive and relevant to the needs of the family. This presentation will help raise cultural awareness with respect to assessment and treatment of challenging behaviors experienced by individuals with complex needs as well as provide insight into how to navigate through cultural barriers in order to most efficiently effect positive change.
